Jono moulds checks out the new single from Feral Sun for The Rock & Roll Circus. “Save Yourself”, set for release on Friday 1 April.

Explosive, melodic, emotion filled music, meaningful lyrics, and a whole lot of Energy “As if fuelled by the sun itself”, is how most fans and Industry Professionals have described FERAL SUN!

Excitement grows after the announcement of the forthcoming single “Save Yourself”, set for release on Friday 1 April, which is promised to have all the beautiful tones that Fans have grown to love.

Soon after releasing their debut album ‘Evacuate’, their singles ‘Breathe’, ‘Long Road’, ‘Evacuate’ and ‘Into Pieces’ played on many stations around the world.

Feral Sun went on to Support SKINDRED on a UK tour, Main support to Puddle of Mudd and South African Rock band Prime Circle, played a prime slot on Hard Rock Hell Festival Mainstage, toured the UK extensively on headline and support slots and a whole lot more.

After reforming with a new line up, and a pandemic that followed, the band released their single’s “Blame” and “Stand Up” and are now gearing up for the release of their brand-new single!

Get Ready… 1 April…this is no joke….. “Save Yourself”.

The briefest introduction of a chord played on the synth; forms the beginning of ‘Feral Sun’s’ brand new single ‘Save Me’, but as quickly as the synth diminishes, does the initial vocal line kick in, as ‘Burns’ announces ‘You’re wrong – You can’t be my friend’. This is sung over a solitary guitar, which plays and picks away on a despairing chord sequence, both sad sounding and mournful.

‘Mick Burns’ provides some insight into the meaning of the song by saying, it’s a “Rock Ballad” of sorts, based around the struggle of depression with a message that, there is always a way out of the darkness and always someone who is willing to listen!

Sadly, the song was born after the news of Chris Cornell (Soundgarden/ Audioslave) and Chester Bennington (Linkin Park) who sadly lost their lives and battle with depression.

Mick, having battled depression himself for many years, has a massive understanding of how deep one can go, and gratefully found a way out back into the light!

So, in many ways, he says that this is not just a song, but a Tribute, to two amazing Musicians who have not only graced us with amazing music but, inspired so many around the world!

And so, back on with the song itself, as we move out of the first verse and into the second, the drums arrive, which provides a solid, but slow to mid paced rhythm, along with a bright and deep bass line. The tune comes to life as we hit the chorus, as guitars drive forward, both in terms of the higher gain strains, but there is a guitar line played between the spaces that fills this section up with some added value. Powerful indeed.

A further verse is played directly after the chorus, before that strong, powerful chorus comes back in for another airing. The bridge continues in a similar vein to that of the chorus, that being, it maintains its authority and ferocity and gets us primed for the track’s guitar solo, which, is quite simply structured (until the outro, when some speed is introduced). The solo is played over the quiet intro to the song, which gives it enough room that it comes to the front of the tune and is mightily impressive, against such a subdued piece.

There’s enough time for another chorus, but this time ‘Burns’ raises the bar with some fine vocal work, where his range is tested and passes with flying colours.

In summary then, this new single from ‘Feral Sun’ is full of the emotion and sadness that you would expect, given the main influence for writing the track. The song has a dark edge to it, both in terms of its lyrical content and the musicianship throughout, which shouldn’t come as a massive surprise, based on the inspiration behind it.

The production is top-notch and certainly captures the essence of the song and the story the band are conveying. This is a strong offering from the band, which, I’m sure, will be a fans favourite.
