Jono moulds check out the new single from The Hellacopters for The Rock & Roll Circus. "Reap A Hurricane" was released via Nuclear Blast Records.
To celebrate the kick-off of this new chapter of THE HELLACOPTERS, the Swedes are sharing with you a brand-new single, the anthemic album opener, "Reap A Hurricane"! The song presents itself as a potential future fan-favourite with all the juicy riffs and in-your-face swagger you could've possibly hoped for, topped off with a captivating chorus that won't leave your head any time soon. In short - it sounds as if the band had never been away!
Reap A Hurricane will be released on seven-inch vinyl on February 4, 2022, with an exclusive B-side, Done Fighting.
The searing feedback of an electric guitar warmly welcomes us to the new single by ‘The Hellacopters’, that being – ‘Reap a Hurricane’, as a second guitar plays the intro riff, just a second or two into the tune.
As the rest of the band join the parade, its instantly noticeable that the drums rhythm pattern is on a peculiar ‘off-beat’, but it certainly doesn’t detract from what is a powerful opening. There’s even time for a fleeting guitar solo to make an appearance before the vocal commences and lead us through the initial verse.
The verse itself is played out over that opening guitar riff, but there’s some additional guitar parts added in to give it a subtle, but evident lift, where the second guitar plays a different riff, all the while allowing it to resonate and feedback. From the off, ‘Andersson’s’ vocal is strong and has no problem whatsoever ripping through the opening lines, where he wails, ‘Let it rain, let it pour – Got a lot, gonna get some more’.
As the opening verse yields, a pre-chorus quickly starts up, with some further layers added into the mix, as the definite sound of piano can be heard sitting in the background rhythm.
And so, onto the chorus, which lyrically is simple and straightforward, as ‘Hurricane - Reap a Hurricane’ is repeated throughout, all this over a simple but very effective four chord sequence. The second verse and chorus is served up in the same format as we heard first time around, until we have a clean break, in order to make room for the two guitars to play the riff in isolation, before we meander into the stand out guitar solo, which again, and for the most part, is played out over that
‘off-beat’ drum pattern (which sounds like it shouldn’t work, but it so does). There is a nice change of direction toward the mid-end of the solo spot, where there is an additional riff added, which once again, gives the song some added lift in the right places.
The outro is just a repeat of the chorus section, but its strong and rocks, as the whole band throw their collective hats into the ring.
The single times in at just over three minutes, but such is its pace and instant appeal that it feels like it’s over a lot quicker than that.
This is my first review of 2022 and what a start it’s been. Not heard of the band or their music before, but on the evidence of this new single, it would be an absolute treat to review their new album, ‘Eyes of Oblivion’ which is due for release in April ’22. Let’s see what the New Year brings.
